Great Place to Train‎‎

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0StarStarStarStar By Brian - May 19, 2010

I've trained BJJ at several academys and can say that I've never had as much personal attention from an instructor as with Mr Haben. Excellent teacher, many programs offered (including stand-up and MMA), nice facility, and great students to train with. Easy to get to with added bonus in that those of us living in the Stone Oak / Canyon Springs area can drive north instead of into traffic after work. I highly recommend checking it out.

I highly recommend this academy! Being a female in a primarily male program, I feel very comfortable working with the instructor and other students. Mr. Haben is great about adapting each individual's instruction to their skill and physical levels. He is also great with the children's class. The kids have fun and are active while learning valuable martial arts and self-defense skills.

Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship

April brought the exciting opportunity for Mr. Haben to travel with Professor Marra to Abu Dhabi, UAE for the World Professinoal Jiu-Jitsu Championships. The Americas Pro Jiu-Jitsu Team hosted 2 of the 5 USA Trials and the Central American Trials and traveled with their respective representatives to compete for the coveted World Championship.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu amongs other martial arts are very well respented in the UAE. This particular tournament is as big in the UAE as the Super Bowl is in the USA. With live National television coverage, on the front page of every newspaper, sectinoal write ups on the kids tournament in the Sports Section, you could very much say that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a national sport. You can see above that itis even on their busses!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is THE Physical Education program for all of their public schools so every child from the time they begin school to the time that they graduate, train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

We are looking forward to the day that the United States of America recognizes the tremendous benifits of the gentle art and begins to allow it to make a positive impact in our schools.

Congratulations to Marra Senki Competition Team's Pete O'Neal as he took the Bronze medal in his division. San Antonio was also represented in exceleence by 'Cocoa' Ray of Rodrigo Pinheiro BJJ who took the Bronze in his division.

A special 'thank you' to Professor Marra and the UAEJJ for bringing such an exceleent and high level event to San Antonio.

Gracie Grappling Cup

The Gracie Grappling Cup hosted another outstanding tournament on March 9, 2011. Congratulations to Johnny Guerrero as he took the Silver Medal representing HMA and Marra Senki Comeptition Team in his division. Special thanks to James Walker for coaching Johnny.

Tournaments are not required and are not for every martial artist. In addition to providing a wonderful learning experience for the individual tournaments also provide a way for an academy to gauge the effectiveness of what is being taught and make adjustments to the curriculum in order to maintain it's effectiveness.

I know martial artist who have never competed in tournaments and would do very well if they did. I also know martial artist who have competed continuously and have hardly, if ever, won a single match but love competing and will continue to do so. Every student who steps on the mat has to summon the courage to train that day and every class serves as a mini 'tournament' if approached correctly.

The correct approach to tournaments beyond just the end result of winning a medal is to go in prepared to learn. Learn about the character of people, learn about courage, learn how to be more effective in your life, overall learn about one's self. Every tournament, every class, every day we take breath in should be a learning experience that allows us to continue to pursue excellence in our lives. Excellence is a continual pursuit so in turn is learning so be a continual student and a continual competitor in life.

A special thanks goes to all of our HMA students. Without all of us not one of us could participate in the tournament circuit. Whenever one of us steps onto the mat to compete we are taking every member of the academy with them into the competition thus we are all learning and advancing together. Wishing everyone a successful 2012!

Graduation and Stripe Night at HMA!

December marked the final advancement for 2011. Our HMA students took another step forward in their Martial Arts journey! As a result of hard work, training and excellent results in tournament competition, students received belt advancement and stripes in both JuKiDo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

You might be wondering why we make such a big deal about belt advancement and stripes. Well we are different than a lot of academies in America by the fact that it takes a good amount of time, dedication and hard work to receive your stripe.

Where most academies advance you to your next belt level within three months, three months allows you the opportunity to earn a stripe at HMA and anywhere from 6-10 years you can achieve a black belt in either or both JuKiDo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This is to assure that each individual achieves their personal best and maximizes their potential in martial arts and life! We are confident that as everyone progresses their individual lives, family and community will continue to benefit through their dedication in martial arts.

Graduation and Stripe Night at HMA!

Friday, March 25, 2011 marked another step forward for our HMA students!

Congratulations to the following students who received their next belt ranking

Wishing everyone a successful 2011!
